Association was housed initially at 24/25,China Bazaar Road and later shifted to 220 (New N.S.C. Bose Road) China Bazaar Road, where on 20.11.1940 the Diamond Madyastham Weighment Section was inaugurated by Sri Vummidi Anantham Chetty. We entered the present new premises No.2, Car Street, N.S.C. Bose Road, Chennai–79 on 1st January 1942 and a new chapter in the history of the Association has begun that day. The Madras Jewellers & Diamond Merchants Association has today grown to reach a strong membership of more than 1200 small, medium and big jewellers.

The prime objective of the Association is to promote and encourage the establishment of new derivative and related markets and to promote communication among members, to strengthen their relationship and to transfer information and experience among them.

It was indeed a fortune for our association that the galaxy of Office-Bearers even at the most nascent stages were people with great mettle and nerve, who put up a most strenuous and dedicated work to build the association on a very strong foundation. Eminent stalwarts such as Sri Kannaiyalal Ishwarlal Mehta (1939-1940), Sri Vummidi Anantham Chetty (1940-1941), Shri Vummidi Pandurangiah (1941-1943), Sri Nathella Sampathu Chetty (1943-1944), Sri Chimanlal Kothari (1944-1945), Sri Nanshankar Tawker (1945-1947), Sri Vummidi Pandurangiah (1947-1966) , Sri Kannaiyalal Ishwarlal Mehta (1966-1967), Shri Nathella Sampathu Chetty (1967-1977), Sri P. Gopalakrishnaiah (1977-1983) Sri Vasantlal C. Mehta (1983-1998), Sri Vummidi Ethiraj (1999-2000), Sri Suresh Bapalal Mehta (2000-2002) Sri. M. Mohanlal and Sri C.V.Pandurangam (2002-2004), Sri. L.K.S Syed Ahamed (2004-2007), Sri.Pravin M Mehta (2007-2008), Sri Babu Emmanuel (2008-2010) served as the Presidents of our Association and have held all the important portfolios in the Association. Their pioneering work and zealous campaigning brought forth to its fold an increase in the number of traders.

At present the seat of Presidency is occupied by Sri Jayantilal J Challani (2010 onwards). His effective leadership is being ably assisted by Hon.Secretary Sri Santha Kumar S along with a team of both experienced and energetic executive committee members.

Gold Control promulgated by Government of India on 9.1.1963 had devastating effects on the trade. Due to sustained efforts for more than 27 years, along with other associations all over India, the gold control act was abolished on 24.5.1990. In order to have unity and avoid disparity in rates between jewelers, the association issues guidelines for daily market rates of Gold & Silver. For the benefit of its members, the association also issues weighment service cards for the weighment of jewellery, precious and semi – precious stones etc.,

The Association has also been authorized by the Government of India to issue the export survey certificates of the valuation of Jewellery, Precious & Semi-Precious Stones Etc., and more than 700 certificates are being issued each year. The association has set up an evaluation panel who have been recommended for the evaluation and appraisal of gems and jewellery at the Department of Customs, Central Excise, Department of Sales and Income Tax, The Magistrate, etc.,

MJDMA is a nonprofit organization enjoying 80G benefits accorded by the income tax department. From time to time it has also represented and highlighted many issues facing the trade with the State and the Central Government and has been instrumental in solving many problems.

During the 70th anniversary of the MJDMA, the association inaugurated its own new building in the heart of the jewellery business center - the Sowcarpet, “The Zaveri Bazaar” of Chennai. A vision of its founding members and a 70 year dream of all its members were fulfilled.

Further facelifts to the association building premises were achieved during 2011 in the form of newly renovated office room, conference room and lift facilities for its members. A grand inaugural session was arranged to celebrate and mark this occasion.

In its constant quest to provide quality service to its members consistently, a dedicated bullion branch of Indian Overseas Branch to sell bullion to our jewellery community is being established at the association office building premises which would prove to be extremely beneficial to the trade and fraternity. A safe fault facility in the ground floor of the office premises is currently under construction which is an exclusive facility to be availed by the members of the association

At present, MJDMA is conducting regular seminars and workshops with GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and IGI (International Gemological Institute). This has helped the new generation among the jewellers with scientific knowledge in access to the jewellery trade. Further, MJDMA is also involved in conducting trade development programs such as Gemstone Identification Program, Gold Appraiser Program, Business Development Program in collaboration with government recognized bodies such as Micro Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME) which assists jewellers in enhancing their careers. Thereby MJDMA a 74 years plus is not an association alone but also an institution where it helps every trader to access with modern technology.

The association’s social concern has led itself in various charitable donations such as gifting free machinery for artisans towards the development of their industry. Being a glowing inspiration for all, our present President, Mr. Jayantilal J Challani’s vision to serve humanity and contribute to the society along with the tremendous support and initiative from its members has involved the association in worthy causes such as donation of “Light Weight Calipers” – walking aid for polio affected patients in collaboration with Indian Red Cross Society, organizing blood donation camps successfully in coordination with Lions Blood Bank, Free Eye Checkup Camps in coordination with Dr. Agarwals’ Eye Hospital, Free Dental Care Camps in coordination with Vasan Dental Care which has proved to be of great benefit for people in and around the locality. A candle lighting movement was launched by our association in order to extend its support to Veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare’s fasting on anti-corruption movement which witnessed a huge response from the members of the association. In the last few years the Association embarked on an ambitious program to expand and promote its operations, with a view to assist the trade. In the year 2005 The Madras Jewellers and Diamond Merchants’ Association came out with their first Business to Business Exhibition named as Gold Jewellery India International Exhibitions (GJIIE). This was done with the aim of making every small or big jeweller, wholesale or manufacturers of India to come under one platform. Manufacturers and Wholesalers in Gold, Diamonds, Platinum, Silver and Gem Stones participated in the 1st Edition of GJIIE held in the month of May 2005. In 2009, MJDMA joined hands with UBM group, one of the leading global media and event marketing organization in the world catering to the B2B markets. Since 2010 the GJIIE is being led successfully by its chairman Sri Yogesh J Shah.

Since its inception in 2005, eminent personalities like Shri P.Chidambaram, Honourable Minister of Finance, Govt. of India, Shri S.S.Barnala His Excellency the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Padmashree Shri Kamal Hasan, Shri Subramaniam the Mayor of Chennai, Smt. Kanimozhi, Rajya Sabha M.P. , Shri G.K. Vasan Honourable Minister Govt. of India, Shri. Jagathrakshagan, Honourable Minister of information and Broadcasting have inaugurated our shows.

GJIIE is considered to be the largest Trade (Business to Business) show of South India and the second largest in India only next to the IIJS Mumbai show of the G.J.E.P.C. GJIIE showcases finest gems and jewellery from across India and abroad. With exhibitors from Dubai, Sri Lanka, Japan, USA, Israel, Belgium, Thailand, Hongkong, with visitors’ strength of more than 12000 business visitors. This show provides great opportunity to small and big jewelers and goldsmith across Tamil Nadu and other Southern States to see, understand and trade with the latest designs and technology in gems and jewellery. International bodies like World Gold Council, Diamond Trading Company and the platinum Guild have endorsed this show.

MJDMA is proud to announce its milestone achievement of becoming ISO 9001:2008 certified. This international standard recognizes and validates our association’s dedication to service to its members, which has always central to the organization’s philosophy and way of working.

ISO 9001 is accepted worldwide as the international standard that endorses a company’s internal Quality Management, confirms its products and services satisfy customers’ quality requirements. The Madras Jewellers and Diamond Merchants’ Association has been awarded ISO 9001:2008 certification for the association for providing quality services for its members, for export survey certification and for communication of daily gold and silver rates and conducting association related activities. In order to perfect its Quality Management system and achieve certification our association underwent a stringent evaluation process. This included a pre-audit assessment, a review of documentation, and clearance of non-conformances. The Madras Jewellers and Diamond Merchants’ Association received its ISO 9001:2008 certificate of registration on 18/08/2011.

MJDMA is efficiently managed by a group of well experienced, eminent jewellers led by an exemplary leader, Mr. Jayantilal J Challani. It is indeed commendable that the association, due to its system and discipline instilled into the trade, has earned the recognition from the government to be treated as a trade body on par of the chambers of commerce.
